Pro-Trump Legal Group Sues Chief Justice Roberts to Limit Judicial Power

A conservative legal organization tied to former Trump adviser Stephen Miller has filed a lawsuit against Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, accusing him and others of overstepping constitutional limits. The suit, brought by America First Legal (AFL), also targets Robert J. Conrad, head of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.

AFL argues that both the U.S. Judicial Conference and the Administrative Office have engaged in executive-like regulatory actions—such as cooperating with congressional ethics inquiries and developing a Supreme Court ethics code—that exceed the judiciary’s proper role. The group claims these functions belong under the Executive Branch and should be overseen by officials accountable to the president.

AFL also wants records from the Judicial Conference to be made available under the Freedom of Information Act, citing their allegedly executive nature. The lawsuit is being handled by Trump-appointed Judge Trevor N. McFadden.

Separately, the Supreme Court recently ruled 6-3 to uphold a Trump-era ban on transgender military service, which the former president celebrated online.
