Teen Dangerously Allergic to Cold Can’t Be Outside Below 75 Degrees

A UK teenager, Calum Courtney, suffers from an extreme and rare allergy to the cold—so severe that he can’t be outside in temperatures below 75°F without breaking out in painful hives or risking anaphylactic shock.

Diagnosed with cold urticaria, the 14-year-old from Essex has reactions even with minimal cold exposure, including while sleeping if any part of his body isn’t fully covered. His condition forces his family to keep their home heated constantly and drive him directly to school to avoid any exposure to chilly air or rain.

Calum’s mom, Tupney Courtney, explained that his symptoms began when he was four, and despite visits to doctors, few fully understood the condition. The allergy disrupts almost every aspect of his life, from sports to vacations—even cold compresses can trigger swelling.

“A cure hasn’t been found yet, and it’s hard to find specialists who understand the condition” Tupney said, hoping one day her son can enjoy normal outdoor activities without dangerous consequences or being doubted by others.
