In a surprising and now-viral moment, a doctor was left stunned after delivering a baby who appeared to be holding his mother’s intrauterine device (IUD) in his hand.

The newborn was delivered at Hai Phong International Hospital in northern Vietnam. Photos shared online show the baby clutching the small, T-shaped contraceptive device—sparking reactions around the world.

A Contraceptive “Fail” with a Twist

The baby’s mother, 34, had an IUD inserted two years before giving birth, believing it would effectively prevent pregnancy. However, the contraceptive clearly failed, and she later discovered she was expecting her third child.

Dr. Tran Viet Phuong, the obstetrician who delivered the baby, said she was surprised and amused when she noticed the baby holding the device shortly after birth.

“After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture. I never thought it would receive so much attention,” she explained.

A Healthy Baby and a Viral Photo

The baby was born healthy, weighing 3.2 kilograms, and the mother reportedly experienced no complications during delivery. Photos of the newborn grasping the IUD quickly made their rounds on social media, with many calling the image “hilarious” and “symbolic.”

“This baby was destined to be born,” one commenter wrote.
“Someone I know had this happen to her too,” said another.

Some people also expressed relief that the IUD didn’t injure the child in any way.

How Did This Happen?

According to Dr. Phuong, the IUD may have shifted out of its correct position in the uterus, making it ineffective and allowing for pregnancy to occur. This is a known, though rare, possibility with intrauterine devices.

There are two main types of IUDs:

• Copper IUDs: Non-hormonal, work by affecting sperm mobility.

• Hormonal IUDs: Release a small amount of hormone to prevent fertilization.

Both are typically highly effective—over 99% when properly placed—but no form of birth control is completely foolproof.

Not the First Time

This isn’t the first time a baby has made headlines for being born “defiantly” holding a contraceptive device. In 2017, a baby named Dexter gained online fame when a photo was posted of him seemingly clutching his mother’s Mirena implant. It was later revealed the image had been staged—the device had been removed during a C-section and placed in the baby’s hand by the parents for a lighthearted photo.
