Calls Grow for Ilhan Omar to Be Deported After Criticizing U.S.
Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Somali refugee and Democrat from Minnesota, is once again under fire after harshly criticizing the United States in a recent interview with Democracy Now.
Omar compared the U.S. to a dictatorship, citing the deployment of troops during protests in Los Angeles and criticizing a military parade held by the Trump administration.
“I grew up in a dictatorship, and I don’t even remember seeing anything like that,” she said. “To have a democracy turn into one of the worst countries, with troops on the streets and a president spending millions to prop himself up like a failed dictator—it’s shocking.”
She called it a “wake-up call” for Americans, stating, “This is not the country we believe in. It’s not the country imagined by our Founding Fathers.” Ironically, Omar herself was not born in the U.S.
Her comments sparked outrage online. Critics accused her of ingratitude, especially considering the U.S. provided her family refuge. Fox News contributor Guy Benson called her remarks “hyperbolic and ungrateful,” while others on X (formerly Twitter) called for her deportation.
“I will never understand immigrants who come here, use every opportunity, and then bash this country,” one user wrote.
Some argued her rhetoric borders on inciting violence against the government. “There’s nothing stopping her from leaving,” another added, referencing her criticism of America while seemingly praising Somalia.
Despite the backlash, Omar has made no indication she plans to leave the U.S.
