This Giraffe Left Photographer Speechless—Then the Sad Truth Was Revealed

For their 40th anniversary, South African couple Marius and Michelle Nortje chose a trip to Kruger National Park over a traditional getaway. During their visit, wildlife photographer Marius spotted a trio of giraffes—one of which immediately caught his attention due to unusual growths covering its body.

He took several photographs and later shared them on Facebook, where the images quickly sparked both curiosity and concern.

Experts later identified the condition as a rare case of bovine papillomavirus (BPV), a disease likely spread by oxpecker birds. While the lumpy growths appear alarming, the condition is not fatal. According to specialists, the giraffe appeared to be grazing peacefully and did not seem to be in visible distress.

The unusual sight touched the hearts of many online, serving as a powerful reminder of the fragility and resilience of wildlife. For the Nortjes, it reinforced why they continue to return to the wild year after year—because sometimes, the most unforgettable moments are the ones that are completely unplanned.
