U.S. Supreme Court Greenlights Trump’s Military Transgender Ban

A week after being sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump signed an executive order titled “Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness,” which bans transgender individuals from enlisting in the military and mandates the removal of current transgender service members.
In response, two LGBTQ legal organizations filed a lawsuit challenging the order. In March 2025, U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes temporarily blocked the policy, ruling that it violated the Equal Protection Clause and unjustly stigmatized transgender individuals.
However, on May 6, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Trump administration, allowing the ban to take effect despite ongoing legal challenges. The administration argues that gender identity inconsistent with biological sex undermines military discipline and readiness.
Human rights organizations, including Lambda Legal and the Human Rights Campaign, strongly condemned the ruling, calling the ban discriminatory and unrelated to actual military effectiveness. Advocates insist that the policy will ultimately be overturned through continued legal and legislative action.
