Senator Jeanne Shaheen Announces Surprise Retirement, Creating Challenge for Democrats Ahead of 2026

In a move that could complicate Democratic efforts to retake the Senate, longtime New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen has announced she will not seek re-election in 2026. The announcement, made in a video posted on March 12, comes as Democrats face tough midterm prospects and look to challenge President Trump.

Shaheen, currently in her second term, said her decision was driven by timing, not a retreat from public service. “It’s just time,” she said, adding that she remains committed to advocating for Democratic causes beyond her Senate tenure.

Her departure leaves Democrats vulnerable in a state that nearly went Republican in 2024. With Trump still popular, New Hampshire could easily flip in 2026—especially without an incumbent on the ballot. Democrats also face a difficult Senate race in Georgia, where freshman Senator Jon Ossoff is up for re-election and polling poorly.

Former Republican Senator Scott Brown and ex-Governor Chris Sununu are both considering bids for Shaheen’s seat, according to recent reports.
